No, I'm not pregnant

But I did buy a maternity belt.
I’ve been having to get used to a new way of dressing. It’s not like I have to get a whole new wardrobe, but I’m more conscious of wearing tighter shirts and such. When I go shopping, I focus on tops that flare or fit a little looser. Which seems to be in style, because I’ve had no problem finding lots of option.
I’ve discovered that dresses are the easiest to wear. (Not something I’m complaining about. Any excuse to buy new dresses is fine with me.) But the problem with dresses is that they don’t provide any support for my ostomy bag. Most of the time it’s not a problem, but if I’m out walking around for a while, it can start to get uncomfortable and cause some stomach pain.
ostomy maternity belt bellyThen the other day, I read a blog post from Lauren on Girls-with-guts.com. She mentioned that she used a maternity belt to give herself some extra support. So I went out yesterday and found one for myself and the difference has been amazing.
It gives me extra support. It’s comfortable. It helps keep things flat and smooth so it doesn’t show as much. It can get bunched up and I’m sure on those 100-degree North Carolina days that it’ll be a bit more of an inconvenience, but it’s good to have found something that’ll help out for the time being.
Here’s a picture of me modeling my new belly belt. I used it with my jeans here since I figured it wouldn’t be appropriate to lift up my skirt. But I’ll probably end up using it with pants, too, because like I said, it helps smooth things out and keep it in place. I still have some issues of feeling like everyone’s looking at me and wondering, “what’s that??” even though I know that’s ridiculous. But I’m appreciative of being able to find something that makes me feel a little more comfortable in my own skin.

I just wanted to express my gratitude for your post. I’m 4 months into my ileostomy and have had a serious mental block with physical intimacy with my wife. While searching for a product that would essentially hide the bag from my view to get past my own emotional baggage (pun intended) and keep it out of the way, I came across your post and realized it’s exactly what I needed. I borrowed my wife’s maternity belt and it did the trick 😀 (showing it to my wife reminded me of the bandanna breakthrough joke on Family Guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsAc_oYNGK0#t=26s ). So thank you for sharing your experiences. I love the site name, btw.

So glad it helped you!! I still wear them even after i was put back together. My scars are sometimes bumpy through my shirts. It definitely helps with lower rise jeans too!

Hey Lauren, yes, to date that is probably the best advice I’ve gotten! I don’t know what I’d do without them. So I appreciate your sharing.

Yes! I wear them all the time. If there was one thing that has been the best find to help with living with an ostomy, this would be it!

Within our family, there are members who live with debilitating conditions that range from mild to severe and are chronic and progressive. I love this mission and the inspiration that it shares. The Stolen Colon shows us that its not easy and it doesn’t need to be as difficult as it can be given the circumstance. Your family is proud of you Stephanie!

Probably not as supportive, but I’ve actually bought the “made for tv: trendy tops”! They’re just t-shirt bands that go under your shirt to make it look like you’ve layered a couple shirts, and it helps hide things a bit, too. They come two to a pack. Glad I found your site!

I have had a temporary ileostomy for almost 8 years! I have had 2 kids in that time and am 100 lbs. I didn’t want to have to stop wearing cute clothes, I found in a lot of outfits just a tight camisole under tips works. Even if I have low rise skinny jeans on! I wear fitted clothes all the time. And most people are shocked when I tell them about my “bag”. We are all survivors and I’m sure could all tell our “war stories”. Do what makes u feel good. This doesn’t define us! It just fits into our life. Proud of u!!! Whatever works for u. Celebrate your health!!! Wear cute clothes!!! Whoo hoo

Hi, I’m currently looking for a lot of information about a life with an ostomy bag, and during my search I came across this https://www.ostomysecrets.com/. Have you tried any of their products? I don’t have an ostomy bag (yet) but I feel more hopeful after finding that there are several companies making clothes, underwear and such for people with stomas.
